The Minnivallalaekur (trout)

TECHNICAL TROUT FISHING FOR prized trout

Better known as the ‘Mini’ this small stream winds its way through the surrounding farmland. This is a trout anglers dream, trout ranging from 2lb to 10lbs+ are caught every season on dry fly. If you love technical sight fishing, this is the river for you. With four rods per day available on the 7km of water, the Mini is perfect for fishermen who like great fishing on an intimate-sized river. In 2001 a record brownie was caught weighing in at 20lbs! Fishermen across Iceland and the world impatiently wait to fish this small but very special river.

Fishing

This is a technical river where small flies and good presentations are needed. It is perfect for those who like walk and wade fishing stalking trout. The average trout is 2 to 5lbs but 9 and 10lb trout are caught every year. The river is easily accessed at multiple points from the road and tracks.

Accommodation

Located in a stand of birch trees overlooking one of the best pools on the river, the small four bedroom lodge offers simple, yet comfortable accommodation. The lodge features a full kitchen and has a hot tub on the veranda. Can be catered if required.

Gear

We recommend the 4 to 6 weight rods as the river holds a lot of big fish. Fishing is mostly done with floating lines but in some situations it is good to have either a sink tip line or a sinking leader. Very small dry flies are popular here. We recommend a visit to a fly shop in Reykjavik.

Trip Specifics

The Minni is a small river, 7 km long, that is easily accessed and waded. Riffles, cut banks and deep pools are home to good populations of brown trout. Tiny flies on small water for large trout, which is the equation for this river. While not every trout is a monster, they are strong and offer the satisfaction of a well-earned catch. When you add the cozy lodge, this experience can’t be missed. Located in the south-west of Iceland, Minnivallalaekur is only 1 hr 30 mins from Keflavik airport and close to Selfoss. Alternatively you can fly into Reykjavik airport by private jet, 1 hr away.

Rates

Every trip to Iceland is different with a varying number of days fishing, possibly in different areas staying in different lodges and with or without non-fishing extensions. Therefore, every trip is by quotation once planned based on your choices and preferences as well as choice of accommodation.
